What to Know About the Port Aransas Attraction
The Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center is located on Ross Avenue, down the street from the Community Park. This popular site features a native pollinator garden and large trees. However, the center's focal point is the two boardwalks, which span over 1,225 feet over freshwater wetlands.
These paths include two shaded observation platforms, two spotting scopes, and benches. All these means you have plenty of spots to stop and look for waterfowl like black-bellied whistling ducks and other species of birds like herons and flaming pink roseate spoonbills.
If you’re looking to enjoy a longer walk, follow the boardwalk that runs parallel to the shore, and you’ll be connected to the nature preserve at Charlie’s Pasture South Trail. This path continues for over a mile along salt marsh and grassland prairie habitats. About halfway down the trail is an observation tower that’s another great spot to enjoy a bit of birding.
The center, a stop on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, is free to visit and open from sunrise to sunset. Please remember to stay on designated trails during your visit. If you’re new to bridging, plan your visit for a Wednesday morning. Experts will lead a guided walk at 9 a.m., and binoculars will be available for loan.
